Great Markets Around Houston

Houston is a mecca for foodies. With a diverse culture steeped in gastronomy and easy access to local growers and farmers, the city is a paradise for those who appreciate fresh foods. We will highlight the very best places where you can go to find fresh ingredients for everything from fried okra to sushi. These are the best farmers’ markets in the Houston area.

Urban Harvest Market

This is one of Houston’s most diverse markets; here you will find everything from flowers to eggs, to the best vegetables, cheeses, meats, and more. You can meet the growers, chat with them, and get information about exactly what you are buying and where it comes from. This is one of the few places in Houston where you can find raw milk products. Parking is not a problem, and there are also breakfast carts for that quick morning fix, and live entertainment on some days.

Rice University Farmers Market

This market may be open only on Tuesday afternoons, but be sure to set aside the day, because it is worth it! A varied offering of the freshest produce, local artisan products, raw honey and cheeses, and so much more. Kale is all the rage and here you will find tasty kale and other vegetable snacks, and fragrant homemade soaps. If you have a pooch, you can even pick up some homemade dog treats! Since the market is right on the university campus, parking is a snap.

Westchase District Farmers Market

This is another market held on a weekday, Thursdays from 3 – 6 pm, but make it a point to stop here. With over two dozen vendors, delectable jarred sauces and condiments are a specialty, plus a fine selection of seasonal produce. Other great finds to be had are eggs, meat, nuts, honey, baked goods, and artisanal products for home and spa.

The Woodlands Farmers Market

This market comes alive every Saturday from 9 am – 1 pm – don’t miss out! Local vendors showcase their garden-fresh fruits and veggies, various health products, and offer prepared food within the Grogan Mill Center. Find delicious goodies from local Whitman Farm, Tejas Heritage Farm, and Breezy Hills Sustainable Farms, among others. For immediate sustenance while you shop, the market hosts rotating food trucks – one every week to be exact.

Houston Farmers Market

Aptly named, this is Houston’s oldest and largest farmers market located on Airline Drive. The 18-acre produce mecca is more of an experience than simply a place to shop. Here you will find more diversified products housed in renovated facilities, with community events to keep everyone in your party occupied. It is open most days until the early evenings.

City Hall Farmers Market

Support Houston’s sustainable food movement by enjoying a variety of locally prepared packaged-to-go and ready-to-eat sustainable food amidst Houston’s dramatic downtown skyline. More than 30 vendors are on site to supply you with what you need for a quick fix meal, or to take home for later preparation. Located in a beautiful setting on both sides of City Hall’s reflection pool, fresh produce by local farmers, with cheeses, breads, roasted coffees, along with food trucks, ensure everyone goes home satisfied.
