Best Golf Courses in Houston

The Houston area is loaded with top rated courses, primed and ready to help you improve or maintain your golf game. We have gathered a list of the best golf courses in Houston. Our picks are based on unbiased golf reviews from several sources, as well as ratings of all Houston courses, be they public, private, or resort golf courses in Houston.

Wildcat Golf Club, Lakes Course, Houston – With two 18-hole courses both designed by Roy Case, this course is built on an old oil field and landfill. It features great views of the city and particularly of NRG Stadium. Of the two courses, The Highlands is links style and generally the better of the two, while the Wildcat’s Lakes course has plenty of water and a little elevation change.

Magnolia Creek, England Course, League City – Designed by Thomas E. Clark, there are three 9-hole courses here, but the England course is the shining star among them. However, all three are unique to Texas and capture the best of the British Isles. Even the flag poles are wooden, such as you would see “across the pond.” But if you like a links style course, the England is as good as it gets. It has unique and fun holes, each of which is different, with roller coaster fairways, lots of bunkers, and challenging green complexes.

South Shore Harbor, Shore Course, League City – originally designed by Dave Marr and Jay Reviere and later renovated in the late 1990s by Jeffery Blume, the Shore Nine Course is regarded as the most challenging of the three 9-hole courses at South Shore. This is thanks to its tough greens, thicker roughs, and tighter fairways. But don’t let that scare you – it is a joy to play, as it’s demanding but fair, and has a good variety of holes that you won’t get tired of playing.

Moody Gardens Golf Course, Galveston, TX – This course plays around Sydnor Bayou and as such, players will find native greenery, shorebird habitat, and water coming into play on 18 holes. The terrain is flat and takes advantage of the natural landscape of brush and sand. With colorful landscaping, bay views and over 500 swaying palm trees, this course makes for a very scenic game of golf. It is both playable and challenging for all skill levels, with the front 9 holes being more traditional, and the back 9 is more demanding with fun and unique holes.

The Wilderness Golf Course, Lake Jackson, TX – For those unfamiliar with the Lake Jackson area, this Jeff Brauer-designed Audubon Sanctuary course qualifies as the proverbial hidden gem. It’s a solid championship golf course on a gorgeous piece of land with imaginative holes, including a par 5 that ends with a green that’s a whopping 180 feet long.

Golf Club of Houston, Humble, TX – Even though this course is not the most walkable, it makes up for that tiny shortcoming with the best collection of holes of any daily-fee course in the area. It also gets top marks for being the best conditioned course, especially in Spring right before and after the Masters, as it’s the host site for the Shell Houston Open. Architect Rees Jones created 18 memorable holes with plenty of water and an amazing finishing stretch.
